There are many grades of stainless steel, the two most commonly used for wire rope are Type 304 and Type 316. Type 304 is subject to rust residue and we do not recommend it. Type 316 is not as subject to rust residue although when iron is present from machining (cutting, grinding etc) and/or the wire is exposed to high humidity and/or salt air it is still possible for rust to accumulate especially at the site where the wire enters the fitting.
Our wire rope is a grade above 316, 316L (Low Carbon). Type 316L stainless steel is an extra-low carbon version of the 316 steel alloy. The lower carbon content in 316L minimizes deleterious carbide precipitation. Consequently, 316L is used in order to ensure maximum corrosion resistance and the reason we only offer Type 316L.
We also only offer 1 x 19 construction, 19 individual strands twisted into a strong, fairly flexible strand of wire. 1 x 19 is the most common construction for wire rope used in cable railings.
Wire can be ordered in whatever length desired, we stock 500′, 1000′ and 5000′ spools but the difference can be made up in a coil to go along with however many spools are called for.
